UAE-based Universal is expanding its dollar-backed stablecoin USDU to the Solana network, targeting institutional trading settlement, tokenized real-world asset cash legs, and cross-border payment flows through licensed providers.
USDU on Solana will broaden Universal’s institutional settlement reach, as the UAE-based issuer expands its dollar-backed stablecoin to support trading venues, tokenized real-world assets and cross-border financial flows.
The integration will allow eligible participants to hold and transfer USDU through Solana’s network, adding another route for digital asset settlement, treasury management and on-chain financial applications. Aquanow, USDU’s global distributor, provides the institutional distribution infrastructure connecting eligible participants with the stablecoin across supported markets.
Already issued on Ethereum, USDU is extending its network presence as Universal builds out the custody, wallet and distribution infrastructure needed to support wider use.
“Solana has built an impressive ecosystem, with the speed, low cost and developer depth that institutional applications need. Bringing USDU to Solana is the next step in our growth: making a regulated US dollar available where on-chain finance is being built,” said Juha Viitala, Senior Executive Officer at Universal.
Viitala identified three initial priorities for the expansion when talking to Unlock: settlement between trading venues and institutional counterparties, the cash leg for tokenized real-world assets, and cross-border settlement through licensed providers.
“We are focusing first on settlement for trading venues and institutional counterparties, on USDU as the cash leg for tokenised real-world assets, and on cross-border settlement, including the payment flows that licensed providers run on top of it.”
The focus on tokenized assets connects USDU’s growth strategy with the development of on-chain capital markets. Bringing an investment asset onto a blockchain also creates a need for a settlement asset: the payment side of the transaction must move alongside the asset being bought or sold.
A dollar stablecoin can provide that cash component, supporting transactions within the same digital infrastructure. For Universal, this opens a potential role for USDU across platforms handling tokenized funds, securities and other real-world assets, subject to the requirements governing each product and market.
The cross-border focus also gives licensed financial providers a potential settlement asset for the payment services they operate. It places USDU within the infrastructure supporting those services, with providers responsible for delivering their permitted activities to customers.
Solana’s appeal for financial applications combines fast transaction processing and low costs with an expanding range of development and integration tools. Those characteristics are relevant to trading and settlement products that move funds frequently and operate beyond conventional banking hours.
Visa has identified Solana’s speed, scalability and low transaction costs as reasons for using it in stablecoin settlement. In December 2025, Visa announced that Cross River Bank and Lead Bank had begun settling with it in USDC over Solana, demonstrating the network’s use within established financial infrastructure.
Developer participation has also expanded. Blockchain infrastructure provider Syndica identified 3,830 new Solana developers in 2025, compared with 3,470 in 2024, under its methodology for tracking open-source development activity.
The Solana Foundation added to that infrastructure in March 2026 with its Developer Platform, an API-based interface bringing together issuance, payments and supporting services to simplify the development of financial products.
For USDU on Solana, the opportunity extends to the applications being built around the network. A larger development ecosystem creates more potential routes for integration into trading, treasury and settlement workflows.
USDU’s Solana expansion follows earlier steps in its distribution strategy. Universalannounced support through Zodia Custody in July and a partnership to integrate USDU into the Bitcoin.com Wallet in August. Together with Aquanow’s distribution role, these developments expand the infrastructure through which eligible participants can access, hold and transfer the stablecoin.
USDU is issued by Universal Digital Intl Limited, which is regulated by ADGM’s Financial Services Regulatory Authority to issue a Fiat-Referenced Token to Professional Clients. Universal is also registered with the Central Bank of the UAE as a Foreign Payment Token Issuer, while USDU became the first USD-backed stablecoin registered as a Foreign Payment Token under the central bank’s Payment Token Services Regulation.
The stablecoin is backed 1:1 by dollar reserves held with UAE banks, including Emirates NBD and Mashreq, with independent reserve attestations published monthly.
“Our standards don’t change from one network to the next. The same issuance, reserve and compliance framework applies,” Viitala said.
Within the UAE, USDU is intended for settlement connected with virtual assets and virtual asset derivatives. International access and use remain subject to applicable requirements.
The expansion of USDU on Solana gives Universal another environment in which to pursue institutional adoption, connecting its UAE-based issuance and reserve structure with the trading, tokenization and payment applications developing across global blockchain markets.
