Elon Musk's October 15 reveal of a SpaceX-thruster-powered Tesla Roadster prototype triggered a 4.9% surge in Hyperliquid's TSLA perpetual futures to ~$378, with hourly trading volume jumping 1,580% from $2.8 million to $47 million while U.S. stock markets were closed.
Crypto traders moved quickly to position themselves in Tesla-linked markets after Elon Musk unveiled a flying version of the Tesla Roadster on October 15. Activity surged on Hyperliquid while U.S. stock exchanges remained closed, highlighting how around-the-clock crypto platforms are increasingly becoming venues for trading reactions to developments involving traditional companies.
The demonstration featured a prototype powered by thruster technology associated with SpaceX. Tesla shares had closed at $362.44 before the reveal, but the reaction extended into crypto derivatives, where traders could continue speculating on the company’s stock price outside conventional market hours.
Hyperliquid’s TSLA perpetual futures contract climbed approximately 4.9% to around $378. Hourly trading volume also jumped sharply, rising about 1,580% from $2.8 million to $47 million as traders responded to the announcement.
The burst of activity made the session the second-busiest trading day for Hyperliquid’s Tesla-linked contract since its listing roughly a year earlier, even though the daily trading candle was only nine hours old at the time.
Hyperliquid was not the largest exchange by trading volume. Binance recorded $279 million in 24-hour volume for the relevant market, compared with $159 million on Hyperliquid, according to RootData. However, Hyperliquid led in open interest, with approximately $99 million in outstanding positions.
Open interest measures the value of derivatives contracts that remain open rather than having been closed or settled. Its elevated level suggests traders had accumulated substantial exposure through the platform, although the figure alone does not reveal whether positions were predominantly bullish or bearish.
Tesla shares also gained momentum ahead of the U.S. market reopening, rising approximately 4.5% in premarket trading. The parallel movement in the stock and its crypto-traded derivative illustrates how sentiment can spread between traditional equities and digital-asset trading venues.
Hyperliquid’s TSLA market is listed through Trade.xyz and operates as a perpetual futures contract linked to Tesla’s share price. It is not a tokenized Tesla share and does not represent direct ownership of the company’s stock.
The contract settles in USDC, a dollar-pegged stablecoin, and offers leverage of up to 20 times. Traders can therefore take positions based on anticipated price movements without opening a conventional brokerage account, although leveraged trading can magnify losses as well as gains.
Unlike Tesla shares traded on Nasdaq, the perpetual contract is available around the clock. This means traders can react to corporate announcements, public appearances and other developments even when the U.S. equity market is closed. In this case, the contract provided an alternative venue for expressing a view on Tesla’s valuation before regular stock trading resumed.
The distinction between a perpetual futures contract and a tokenized share is important. While both may provide exposure to movements in an underlying stock’s price, the derivative does not confer shareholder rights or direct ownership of the underlying equity.
The trading surge followed Musk’s Roadster demonstration ahead of Tesla’s scheduled third-quarter earnings report on October 21. The upcoming results could provide another catalyst for activity in Tesla-linked crypto derivatives as traders assess the company’s performance and outlook.
The combination of a high-profile product reveal and an approaching earnings announcement creates multiple potential sources of price volatility. Because perpetual futures remain open outside traditional market hours, traders can adjust their positions before investors using conventional stock markets have the opportunity to trade.
However, sharp increases in volume do not necessarily indicate a lasting change in market sentiment. Activity can spike around major announcements as traders open and close positions rapidly, while leverage can amplify price swings and increase liquidation risk.
