RAKBANK Islamic has launched direct Bitcoin trading through its mobile app, allowing UAE customers to buy, sell, and hold BTC in UAE dirhams via Bitpanda Broker MENA DMCC, a VARA-regulated entity. The bank positions itself as the first conventional bank with an Islamic banking window in the UAE to offer regulated virtual asset trading through a partner platform.
RAKBANK is bringing Bitcoin trading directly into its Islamic banking platform, giving customers in the UAE a new way to buy, sell, and hold the cryptocurrency without leaving their banking app.
The bank announced on August 24 that RAKBANK Islamic customers can now access Bitcoin through Bitpanda's regulated virtual asset trading infrastructure directly from the RAKBANK mobile application. Transactions can be funded from customers' existing current or savings accounts in UAE dirhams.
The milestone brings cryptocurrency access closer to the traditional banking experience while targeting customers who want exposure to virtual assets through a platform aligned with their financial preferences and Islamic banking principles.
Under the new service, customers no longer need to move funds between their bank accounts and an external crypto exchange before purchasing Bitcoin.
Instead, eligible users can access Bitcoin through the RAKBANK app and fund transactions directly from their RAKBANK Islamic accounts in dirhams. The setup also eliminates the need for foreign-exchange conversions that may otherwise be required when transferring funds to an overseas crypto platform.
RAKBANK said the service is designed to simplify access to virtual assets while maintaining the security, transparency and regulatory standards associated with its banking infrastructure.
The service is provided through Bitpanda Broker MENA DMCC, Bitpanda's Dubai entity regulated by the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA). RAKBANK provides the banking interface and access through its Islamic banking platform.
The launch comes as interest in virtual assets continues to expand across the UAE, with banks and regulated financial institutions increasingly looking for ways to bring digital assets into conventional financial services.
RAKBANK's approach is notable because the service is being introduced through its Islamic banking offering rather than a standalone crypto platform.
Vikas Suri, Managing Director of the Wholesale Banking Group's Products division at RAKBANK, said the bank wanted to make access to emerging financial technologies available in a way that reflects customers' values and financial choices.
The bank said the service allows customers to explore Bitcoin through regulated infrastructure while maintaining the principles underpinning RAKBANK Islamic.
Bitpanda is providing the virtual asset trading infrastructure through its UAE-regulated entity, Bitpanda Broker MENA DMCC.
The company operates across multiple regulated markets and provides digital-asset infrastructure to financial institutions through its institutional technology business, Bitpanda Enterprise.
For RAKBANK, the partnership allows the bank to integrate virtual asset access without operating an exchange itself, while giving customers a familiar entry point through the bank's existing mobile platform.
The arrangement also reflects a broader trend in the financial sector: traditional banks are increasingly partnering with regulated digital-asset companies rather than building crypto trading infrastructure entirely in-house.
RAKBANK described the launch as a milestone for the UAE banking sector, positioning itself as the first conventional bank with an Islamic banking window to provide access to virtual asset trading through a regulated partner platform.
The service builds on RAKBANK's existing strategic relationship with Bitpanda and forms part of the bank's wider push into emerging financial technologies.
Rather than requiring customers to navigate separate crypto exchanges, wallets and bank transfers, the model brings virtual asset access into an environment they already use for everyday banking.
That could prove particularly significant as regulated digital assets become increasingly integrated into the UAE's financial system.
The launch also highlights the UAE's evolving approach to digital assets, where regulators have been developing dedicated frameworks for virtual asset activities while encouraging financial institutions to explore blockchain-based services within regulated boundaries.
For banks, the challenge is no longer simply whether customers want access to cryptocurrencies. It is increasingly about how that access can be provided with appropriate safeguards, regulatory oversight and clear links to the existing financial system.
RAKBANK's Bitcoin offering illustrates one answer: keep the banking relationship at the center while outsourcing the specialized virtual asset infrastructure to a regulated provider.
If the model gains traction, it could pave the way for more financial institutions in the region to integrate regulated digital assets directly into their banking platforms.
For now, RAKBANK Islamic's Bitcoin launch marks another step in the UAE's convergence of traditional banking and the digital-asset economy, bringing cryptocurrency one step closer to becoming part of the everyday banking experience.
