Mubadala Capital has tokenized a $75 million private markets fund on blockchain networks through a partnership with KAIO and Coinbase, with Coinbase participating as both infrastructure provider and direct investor for onchain treasury management.
Mubadala Capital, the asset management arm of Abu Dhabi-based Mubadala Investment Company, has moved a private markets fund onto blockchain networks through a partnership with tokenization platform KAIO and Coinbase.
The initiative, announced on July 23, 2026, represents a significant step in the adoption of blockchain-based financial infrastructure by institutional investors. Notably, Coinbase is taking on a dual role in the project, acting not only as an infrastructure provider but also as a direct investor in the fund to support its onchain treasury management strategy.
Through its collaboration with KAIO, Mubadala Capital transformed a private markets fund into a regulated digital token designed to operate across multiple blockchain networks.
Access to the tokenized fund remains limited to qualified institutional and accredited investors, maintaining compliance with traditional financial regulations while leveraging blockchain technology to improve transparency, accessibility, and operational efficiency.
The tokenized fund has a reported value of $75 million, while its associated vehicle, MCAS-TA, held approximately $63.5 million in assets as of June 2026.
KAIO has already supported the tokenization of more than $200 million in assets from funds managed by major financial institutions, including BlackRock, Brevan Howard, and Hamilton Lane.
The latest project follows a partnership announced between Mubadala and KAIO in December 2025, which aimed to explore blockchain-based access to private market investment strategies. The launch of the tokenized fund indicates that the initiative has progressed from experimentation to a fully operational product.
Coinbase's involvement marks a notable development in institutional tokenization, as the publicly listed U.S. company is participating as both a technology provider and an investor.
By committing capital directly to the fund for onchain treasury management purposes, Coinbase creates a stronger alignment between its infrastructure services and the growth of tokenized financial products.
Mubadala Capital’s tokenization initiative highlights how blockchain technology is gradually moving beyond digital assets and into traditional investment markets. The involvement of a sovereign-backed investment entity, combined with Coinbase’s direct investment, signals that tokenization is increasingly being viewed as a practical financial infrastructure upgrade rather than a speculative trend.
As more institutions explore blockchain-based representations of private funds, the competitive advantage may shift toward platforms capable of combining regulatory compliance, institutional-grade custody, and efficient onchain settlement. This development suggests that the next phase of blockchain adoption could be driven less by retail activity and more by the modernization of traditional capital markets.
