Dubai Duty Free has become the Middle East's first airport retailer to accept regulated crypto payments, deploying Crypto.com Pay at Dubai International Airport, Al Maktoum International Airport, and its online store, with settlement processed in UAE dirhams.
Dubai Duty Free has introduced crypto payments at its airport retail locations and online platform through Crypto.com Pay™, becoming the first airport retailer in the Middle East to deploy the regulated digital payment solution.
The new payment option allows eligible customers to use their Crypto.com accounts to complete purchases at Dubai International Airport (DXB), Al Maktoum International Airport (AMIA), and through Dubai Duty Free’s online store.
Transactions are processed through Crypto.com’s regulated payment infrastructure, with Dubai Duty Free receiving settlement in UAE dirhams (AED), allowing the retailer to accept digital asset payments without directly managing crypto assets.
Under the new system, customers can select Crypto.com Pay™ at checkout and authorize payments through the Crypto.com application.
For in-store purchases, Dubai Duty Free’s point-of-sale systems generate a Crypto.com QR code based on the purchase amount in AED. Customers scan the code through the Crypto.com app and confirm the transaction, after which payment confirmation is integrated into the retailer’s existing checkout process.
The same functionality is available for online purchases through Dubai Duty Free’s website, where customers can select Crypto.com Pay™ during checkout and complete authorization through the mobile application.
The integration allows Dubai Duty Free to maintain settlement in local currency while offering customers an additional digital payment option.
The rollout follows a strategic partnership between Dubai Duty Free and Crypto.com announced in 2025 to explore blockchain-enabled payment solutions and digital innovation initiatives.
Crypto.com said the payment service operates under the regulatory framework established by the Central Bank of the UAE, following its receipt of a Stored Value Facilities (SVF) licence, which enables regulated payment services in the country.
The launch reflects the UAE’s broader approach of integrating digital assets into regulated financial infrastructure rather than treating crypto payments as a separate financial ecosystem.
The adoption of Crypto.com Pay by one of the world's largest airport retailers signals a shift in how digital assets are being positioned within commercial payments.
While crypto payments have historically faced challenges around volatility, compliance, and merchant adoption, regulated payment solutions are increasingly allowing businesses to accept digital asset-based transactions while receiving settlement in traditional currencies.
For Dubai, the move aligns with its broader digital payments agenda, including the Dubai Cashless Strategy under the Dubai Economic Agenda (D33), which aims to increase cashless transactions across public and private sectors.
By integrating crypto payments into a high-volume retail environment used by international travelers, Dubai Duty Free provides a real-world test case for how regulated digital payment infrastructure can support mainstream commerce.
