Stablecoins & Payments

Coinbase has listed Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin across its retail app, Coinbase Exchange, and Coinbase Prime, enabling deposits and withdrawals on XRPL, Ethereum, and Base. The integration follows RLUSD surpassing a $2.4 billion market cap and expands Ripple's distribution to Coinbase's retail and institutional customer base.
Coinbase has added Ripple USD (RLUSD) to its retail app, Coinbase Exchange and Coinbase Prime, expanding the stablecoin’s availability to retail and institutional customers across three blockchain networks.
Announced on October 28, the integration allows customers in supported regions to trade and manage RLUSD, with deposits and withdrawals available through the XRP Ledger (XRPL), Ethereum and Base. Customers can also convert US dollars and other supported dollar-denominated stablecoins into RLUSD at a 1:1 ratio.
The expansion gives Ripple access to Coinbase’s retail and institutional customer base while extending RLUSD’s reach across trading, digital-asset infrastructure and onchain financial services.
The integration covers Coinbase’s retail app, Coinbase Exchange and Coinbase Prime, the platform serving institutional clients.
Customers can deposit and withdraw RLUSD across XRPL, Ethereum and Base, giving them multiple networks through which to transfer the stablecoin. Ripple will also provide liquidity on Base to support RLUSD’s availability and use across the network.
Support for Coinbase Global Exchange customers, including the use of RLUSD as trading collateral, is expected to follow. The companies have not specified a launch date for that additional functionality.
The integration expands RLUSD’s distribution beyond its existing exchange listings and blockchain ecosystem. Coinbase customers can access the token through an established trading platform without relying exclusively on other exchanges or standalone wallets.
Ripple launched RLUSD in December 2024 as a US dollar-backed stablecoin designed for payments and institutional financial applications. According to Ripple's October 28 announcement, the token's market capitalization had surpassed $2.4 billion.
RLUSD is redeemable for US dollars and backed by reserves that include US dollar deposits, short-term US Treasury securities and other cash equivalents.
Its availability on Coinbase adds another distribution channel as stablecoin issuers compete to establish their tokens across exchanges, payment services and blockchain-based financial applications.
Coinbase has historically maintained a close relationship with Circle's USDC, but its stablecoin offering has expanded to include other dollar-backed tokens, including PayPal USD (PYUSD) and Open USD.
The addition of RLUSD gives customers another option for dollar-denominated trading and transfers while broadening the range of stablecoins available through Coinbase's platforms.
The Coinbase integration follows a series of developments through which Ripple has been expanding RLUSD's distribution and institutional use.
On October 27, Ripple announced a strategic partnership with Robinhood covering retail and institutional markets. RLUSD is already available on Robinhood Chain and Bitstamp by Robinhood, with availability in the Robinhood retail app expected later in 2026. The partnership also includes plans to use RLUSD for institutional settlement through the XRP Ledger.
Ripple has also expanded its collaboration with BNY around digital-asset custody and tokenized trade finance, broadening its engagement with established financial institutions.
These developments connect RLUSD to several parts of the digital-asset market, from exchange trading and institutional settlement to custody and financial infrastructure.
Unlock Blockchain previously reported on Ripple’s launch of RLUSD, including CoinMENA’s role in its initial MENA rollout. The stablecoin's subsequent expansion reflects its continued rollout across exchanges and institutional platforms.
The Coinbase listing comes as financial institutions and technology companies explore stablecoins for uses beyond cryptocurrency trading, including payments, settlement and corporate treasury operations.
Coinbase has been developing this infrastructure through partnerships with traditional financial institutions. In September, Unlock Blockchain reported on Citi and Coinbase's expansion of stablecoin payment services for corporate customers, which connects Coinbase's stablecoin payment rails with Citi's banking and settlement infrastructure.
The RLUSD integration is different from that arrangement: it primarily expands access to a specific stablecoin across Coinbase's retail and institutional trading platforms, rather than announcing a new corporate payment service.
For Ripple, wider exchange distribution could help increase RLUSD's accessibility and potential use across supported networks. However, the extent to which the integration translates into greater payment volumes, institutional settlement activity or adoption on Base will depend on customer demand and subsequent product developments.
Coinbase's planned support for RLUSD as collateral on its global exchange could provide an additional institutional use case once introduced.
The expansion therefore adds another route for RLUSD to reach traders and institutions, while leaving further growth dependent on how customers use the stablecoin across trading, transfers and financial applications.
