OKX has expanded its Shield account-protection program to US users, offering discretionary reimbursements of up to $500,000 for eligible account takeovers caused by phishing, malware, or SIM-swapping attacks, subject to strict security and eligibility conditions.
Crypto exchange OKX has expanded its OKX Shield account-protection program to the United States, offering eligible customers potential reimbursements of up to $500,000 for losses resulting from third-party account takeovers.
Announced on October 20, the program is available without a subscription or activation fee. Eligible regular users may receive up to $100,000, while customers in VIP tiers 1–3 have a limit of $250,000 and those in VIP tier 4 and above may qualify for up to $500,000.
The program targets account takeovers involving threats such as phishing, malware and SIM-swapping attacks. However, the advertised amounts are maximum limits, not guaranteed payouts. OKX reviews claims individually and retains discretion over whether to reimburse a customer.
To activate Shield, eligible customers must enable a passkey, large-withdrawal protection and multifactor authentication, disable web withdrawals, and meet OKX's device-security and account-eligibility checks. The required security settings must remain active for protection to continue.
The program applies to eligible losses involving unauthorized access to an OKX Exchange account. It does not cover every type of crypto fraud. Transactions initiated, approved or signed by the user are excluded, even if the user was deceived into authorizing them. Trading losses and funds held in OKX Wallet or on external platforms are also excluded.
OKX's terms describe Shield as a voluntary, discretionary goodwill initiative rather than insurance, a deposit guarantee or an investor-compensation scheme. Each eligible user may receive no more than one approved claim across OKX entities during their lifetime, and claims must be submitted within 72 hours of the last unauthorized transfer.
Reimbursements are paid in stablecoins, subject to the program's terms and the outcome of the review.
Shield adds a potential reimbursement mechanism to the security controls crypto exchanges use to protect customer accounts. Passkeys, multifactor authentication, withdrawal restrictions and device checks can help reduce the risk of unauthorized access, although they cannot eliminate every threat.
OKX first introduced Shield to eligible customers in Europe in September before extending the program to the US. The expansion comes as the exchange develops its presence in the American market.
In April 2025, Unlock Blockchain reported on OKX's return to the US market following a settlement of more than $500 million. The company's operating entity had pleaded guilty to operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business and agreed to pay penalties and forfeitures. The exchange subsequently relaunched its US platform.
Shield represents a separate customer-protection initiative; it does not alter the terms of that settlement or establish regulatory approval for other services.
For users, the program's practical value will depend on maintaining the required security settings, understanding the exclusions and meeting the claim deadlines. The reimbursement limits provide a potential recovery route for qualifying account takeovers, but customers should not treat Shield as a guarantee that stolen funds will be returned.
