Cargill, the American agricultural corporation, is testing a blockchain platform to track the provenance of turkey products. Launched before Thanksgiving, Cargill's Honeysuckle White brand will use the technology to enable consumers to trace it from the farm to their table. The turkeys that are set to be tracked will be mainly sold in Texas.
The blockchain-based system is going to be used by farms within Cargill's network, to allow consumers to find information about the turkeys. When a customer purchases a turkey, a label on the packaging will include a code that the customer can enter on the Honeysuckle White website and check the farm’s location, the family farm story, as well as see photos of the farm and comments from the framers themselves.
Deb Bauler, Cargill’s Chief Information Officer for North American Protein, expressed “The transparency pilot with Honeysuckle White brand turkeys is one example of how we are using technology to shape the food system of the future and deliver on consumers’ desire for transparency in food.”
