U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $517.19 million in net inflows on Wednesday, the largest single-day total since May 4, as Bitcoin briefly surpassed $72,000 and improving macro conditions revived institutional demand. Spot Ether ETFs added $189 million, bringing combined inflows for both asset classes above $700 million.
U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded$517.19 million in net inflows on Wednesday, while spot Ether ETFs attracted a further $189 million, bringing combined inflows into the two asset classes to more than $700 million.
The surge in demand came as Bitcoin briefly climbed above $72,000 during the broader crypto market rally, triggering an estimated $2.7 billion in liquidations of bearish positions and marking one of the strongest days for ETF flows in months.
AsUnlock Blockchain reported earlier, the U.S. Treasury's decision to expand the maximum size of its buyback operations to $4 billion has brought bond yields and broader financial conditions back into focus for crypto markets.
Data from SoSoValue showed that eight of the 12 U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net inflows on Wednesday.
BlackRock's IBIT led the group with $284.7 million, followed by ARK 21Shares' ARKB with $77.7 million and Fidelity's FBTC with $62.4 million.
The $517.19 million total represented the largest daily net inflow into U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs since May 4, signaling a significant return of capital following a period of weaker and more volatile ETF flows.
The move coincided with a broader recovery across digital assets. At the time of writing, Bitcoin was trading around $69,564, up 8.3% over 24 hours, while Ethereum had gained nearly 18% to trade around $2,251. XRP and Solana were also up by around 10%.
Market participants linked the renewed ETF demand to improving macro conditions.
The Treasury announced plans to increase the maximum size of certain liquidity support buyback operations, including operations involving longer-dated nominal coupon securities.
Treasury buybacks can influence market liquidity and demand for existing government debt, while movements in Treasury yields can affect financial conditions and the relative appeal of risk assets.
Lower yields can reduce the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets such as Bitcoin, although the impact of the Treasury's expanded buyback capacity will depend on how the program is implemented and how bond markets respond.
The Treasury development coincided with the Securities and Exchange Commission's latest proposal to establish tailored exemptions for certain crypto offerings, providing another potential positive signal for the industry.
The SEC proposal would establish two potential exemptions, including an option for certain issuers to raise up to $5 million over four years and another allowing eligible offerings of up to $75 million annually, subject to additional disclosure and reporting requirements.
Together, the developments helped improve sentiment across the digital asset market, although it remains difficult to isolate the impact of either event on Wednesday's ETF flows.
Rachael Lucas, a crypto analyst at BTC Markets, said the scale of the inflows suggested renewed positioning by larger institutional investors rather than a short-term retail-driven move.
After heavy outflows earlier in the year and more uneven flows through July and August, she said the latest inflows indicated that larger investors may be viewing current prices as constructive entry points or increasing their existing exposure.
The ETF data provides one of the clearest indicators of institutional demand for Bitcoin because the products allow investors to gain exposure through regulated investment vehicles.
Wednesday's inflows also suggest that institutional demand remains capable of returning quickly when market and macro conditions become more favorable.
However, the scale of the latest inflow does not necessarily indicate that similar demand will continue in the coming days.
The Treasury's expanded buyback cap will take effect in September, while upcoming inflation data and expectations around future Federal Reserve policy could continue to influence Treasury yields and broader risk appetite.
For crypto markets, the question is now whether Wednesday's ETF inflows represent the start of a more sustained recovery in institutional demand or a sharp, short-term response to an improving market backdrop.
