Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Investment Company, acting through its AI platform MGX, is considering a ¥1 trillion ($6.3 billion) investment to develop a 500-megawatt AI data center in Japan's Akita prefecture, in partnership with US startup BitGrid and Japanese firm S2, with operations targeted for the early 2030s.
Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund Mubadala Investment Company is considering a major investment of up to ¥1 trillion ($6.3 billion) to develop an artificial intelligence data center in Japan’s Akita prefecture, highlighting the UAE’s growing role in the global AI infrastructure race.
The planned facility is expected to provide around 500 megawatts of capacity and could become operational in the early 2030s, positioning it as one of the largest AI-focused infrastructure projects involving UAE capital abroad.
The project is being developed by US-based startup BitGrid in partnership with Japanese technology company S2. Mubadala’s potential investment would be carried out through MGX, the UAE’s specialized AI investment platform launched in 2024 to build a global portfolio across artificial intelligence infrastructure, semiconductors, and advanced technologies.
The potential investment reflects the UAE’s broader strategy of becoming a major player in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, blockchain, and Web3 infrastructure.
Through MGX, Abu Dhabi is positioning itself as a global technology investor rather than only a regional financial hub. The platform aims to manage more than $100 billion in AI-related assets, targeting critical sectors such as data centers, computing power, and semiconductor infrastructure.
MGX has already accelerated its expansion in the data center market. In July 2026, the investment vehicle completed the acquisition of Aligned Data Centers, while also reportedly exploring further opportunities in the sector, including discussions around Singapore-based DayOne, which operates data center assets in Japan.
Japan has been actively attracting international investment into its digital infrastructure sector, particularly as demand for AI computing capacity continues to rise.
The country offers several advantages for large-scale data center projects, including access to renewable energy resources and government policies supporting the development of computing facilities outside major metropolitan areas.
Akita prefecture, located in northern Japan, aligns with this strategy by offering space for large infrastructure projects and supporting Japan’s efforts to distribute computing capacity beyond traditional technology hubs.
The Mubadala-MGX expansion into AI infrastructure reflects the UAE’s wider ambition to lead innovation across emerging technology sectors.
Over recent years, the country has invested heavily in building a digital economy ecosystem that includes artificial intelligence, blockchain adoption, cryptocurrency regulation, and Web3 development. Through initiatives in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the UAE has attracted global technology companies, digital asset firms, and blockchain startups seeking regulatory clarity and access to capital.
By investing in the infrastructure powering AI models and digital services, the UAE is moving beyond technology adoption toward becoming a provider of the underlying systems that support the next generation of digital economies.
The potential Mubadala investment comes as countries and institutional investors compete to secure access to AI infrastructure, particularly data centers and advanced computing capacity.
As artificial intelligence applications expand, access to computing resources has become a strategic priority similar to energy and telecommunications infrastructure. Large-scale investments in data centers are increasingly viewed as essential for maintaining technological competitiveness.
For Japan, the potential deal would represent one of the country’s largest foreign-backed commitments in AI infrastructure, while for the UAE it reinforces its ambition to participate directly in the global technology supply chain.
From an analytical perspective, the UAE’s investments in AI infrastructure show a shift from positioning itself as a consumer of emerging technologies to becoming a key investor and builder of the digital foundations behind them. By combining capital, regulatory initiatives, and investments in areas such as AI, blockchain, and Web3, the country is attempting to secure a strategic role in the future technology economy.
The Mubadala-MGX expansion suggests that competition in the next decade will not only be about developing applications, but also about controlling the infrastructure that powers them.
