S&P Global Ratings has launched a Vault Risk Assessment framework to evaluate investor risk in blockchain-based lending vaults, as deposits in the sector grew from $1.5 billion in September 2024 to $10 billion in September 2026.
S&P Global Ratings has introduced a new Vault Risk Assessment (VRA) framework designed to provide a forward-looking view of the risks that could erode investor positions in blockchain-based lending vaults.
The framework arrives as capital flowing into these structures has expanded sharply. Deposits in the market reached approximately $10 billion in September 2026, compared with around $1.5 billion two years earlier, highlighting the rapid growth of a segment that increasingly sits at the intersection of decentralized finance and institutional investment.
The VRA applies a framework more commonly associated with institutional risk analysis to the rapidly expanding DeFi lending market.
Rather than assessing the attractiveness of a vault’s yield or assigning a conventional credit rating to its issuer, the framework focuses specifically on the relative risk of a decline in the value of an investor’s position.
That distinction is important in DeFi, where a high advertised yield does not necessarily provide a complete picture of the risks attached to the underlying strategy.
Digital-asset lending vaults pool investor deposits and deploy the capital across blockchain-based networks according to defined investment strategies.
S&P Global Ratings compares these structures with managed fixed-income funds. Their strategies can be executed entirely through smart contracts, managed by human portfolio managers, or operate through a combination of automated and discretionary management.
Investors typically receive tokenized representations of their share in the vault, reflecting their proportional interest in its underlying assets and accrued returns.
Tokenization, however, does not by itself reveal the risk profile of the investment. According to the framework, the strategy being employed and the operational conditions surrounding it remain central to understanding an investor’s exposure.
The growth in deposits highlights why a more structured approach to risk assessment is becoming increasingly relevant.
Based on the figures cited by S&P Global Ratings, deposits increased from $1.5 billion in September 2024 to $10 billion in September 2026, representing roughly a 6.7-fold increase.
As more capital enters these vaults, decisions around eligible assets, liquidity management and portfolio oversight become increasingly significant to investors.
The scale also increases the potential consequences of weaknesses in the underlying infrastructure, particularly where multiple layers of risk interact across lending protocols, blockchain networks and vault governance.
S&P Global Ratings' Vault Risk Assessment examines six primary areas that can influence the risk of losing value in a lending-vault position.
These include portfolio credit quality, liquidity mismatches, custodian risk, blockchain technology risk, protocol risk, and vault security and governance risk.
The framework is therefore designed to look beyond the assets held by a vault at any particular moment.
A portfolio may appear relatively stable based on its current holdings, while its broader risk profile can still be affected by liquidity constraints, protocol vulnerabilities, technological failures or weaknesses in governance and security.
Blockchain-based investment structures offer a level of transaction visibility that is difficult to replicate in traditional markets. But transparent transactions do not necessarily mean transparent risk.
S&P Global Ratings' framework is intended to address that distinction by focusing on how risks are structured and managed rather than simply whether transactions can be observed on-chain.
The VRA is not a credit rating, nor does it assess the level or attractiveness of a vault's yield.
Instead, it is designed as a forward-looking opinion on the relative overall risk that an investor's position in a lending vault could lose value.
Jan Lou Balik, global head of ratings at S&P Global Ratings, said the company is seeing growing demand for independent risk assessments capable of connecting traditional finance with decentralized markets.
As institutional participation in digital assets increases, investment managers are also facing greater pressure to establish formal governance around issues such as security, transparency and, where necessary, the ability to freeze assets.
S&P Global Ratings plans to publish initial Vault Risk Assessments in subsequent disclosures, providing investors with additional information as the framework is applied to individual vaults.
The launch of the VRA reflects a broader evolution in decentralized finance.
The rapid expansion of lending-vault deposits suggests that DeFi is attracting increasingly significant pools of capital, but greater scale also creates a stronger demand for frameworks that can translate complex technical and operational risks into a format institutional investors can evaluate.
S&P Global's approach does not replace traditional credit ratings. Instead, it addresses a different layer of risk, one that combines credit exposure, liquidity, technology, protocols, security and governance within a single blockchain-based investment structure.
