Vitalik Buterin has received the highest state distinction awarded by Liberland during ETHPrague 2026, as the blockchain-focused micronation continues promoting its vision of digital governance and decentralized state infrastructure.
The award ceremony took place during a side event connected to the Ethereum conference in Prague, where Liberland President Vít Jedlička presented Buterin with the “First Class Order of Merit of the Star of Liberland.”
According to statements released by Liberland officials, the recognition was intended to honor Buterin’s contributions to blockchain technology as well as his broader interest in decentralized governance systems and digital-era institutional models.
Liberland described the award as part of its broader effort to support technological experimentation related to governance, citizenship, and institutional structures built around blockchain infrastructure.
In comments shared during the event, Buterin thanked the Liberland community and expressed interest in future collaboration between blockchain ecosystems and alternative governance initiatives.
He also noted that it would be interesting to explore whether tools and systems developed within Ethereum and related communities could eventually contribute to projects experimenting with new governance models.
Founded in 2015, Liberland is a self-declared micronation located on disputed territory between Croatia and Serbia along the Danube River.
Although it is not officially recognized as a sovereign state by any country or international institution, the project has gained visibility within libertarian, crypto, and blockchain circles over the past decade.
Liberland presents itself as an experimental model focused on limited government, voluntary systems, digital citizenship, and blockchain-based governance. The initiative has long advocated for integrating onchain voting systems and decentralized administrative frameworks into public governance structures.
The project attracted renewed attention in 2024 after Justin Sun, founder of TRON, was elected as the micronation’s prime minister.
Sun has previously described Liberland as a potential blueprint for future digital societies built around blockchain infrastructure, borderless innovation, and decentralized governance principles.
The recognition of Buterin reflects how parts of the blockchain industry continue exploring governance models that extend beyond finance and digital assets into broader political and institutional experimentation.
Over recent years, blockchain-based communities have increasingly examined concepts such as digital citizenship, decentralized voting, token-based governance systems, and virtual jurisdictions.
While many of these projects remain largely symbolic or experimental, supporters argue they represent early attempts to rethink how governance, coordination, and civic participation could evolve in increasingly digital societies.
Critics, however, continue questioning the practical viability, legal recognition, and accountability structures of blockchain-based governance models, particularly when tied to entities lacking sovereign recognition.
Still, Liberland’s continued visibility within major crypto conferences and its connections to prominent blockchain figures suggest that interest in alternative digital governance systems remains active within parts of the Web3 ecosystem.
