Elon Musk's xAI to Launch Upgraded Grok-1.5 Chatbot Next Week

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup xAI announced in a blog post on Thursday the upcoming launch of an upgraded version of its chatbot Grok. According to the statement, the new iteration, named Grok-1.5, is set to be released to early testers and current Grok users on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, in the coming days.

Billionaire Elon Musk confirmed this development in a Friday post on X, stating that xAI's chatbot Grok-1.5 is anticipated to be accessible to the public by next week, following its transition to open-source status and official entry into the rapidly expanding AI chatbot market. Musk also disclosed the ongoing development of Grok 2, expressing his confidence that it will surpass current AI benchmarks, with training currently underway.

The startup emphasized that one of the noteworthy enhancements in the new version is its proficiency in handling coding and math-related tasks. The blog post highlights that the latest model of the chatbot boasts enhanced reasoning capabilities and a context length of 128,000 tokens, indicating its ability to process and retain a significant amount of textual information.

In December, Grok was introduced to Premium+ subscribers of X. Earlier this month, Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, which he co-founded in 2015 but departed from in 2018, along with its CEO Sam Altman. The lawsuit alleges that the company has prioritized its shareholders over fulfilling its commitment to making the ChatGPT model open-source.

Established as an alternative to technology giants such as Microsoft, OpenAI, and Alphabet's Google, Musk officially launched xAI last July with the vision of creating a highly accurate AI system. The initial version of Grok was rolled out in November, with Musk announcing shortly after that he would merge his AI venture with the social media platform X. Initially available only to X Premium+ users paying a $16 monthly subscription fee, Musk later announced plans to make the chatbot open-source for all users in early March.

The AI chatbot arena has become increasingly competitive in recent years, notably with the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT model in November 2022, followed by Google's entry into the field with its Bard model in March 2023. Despite a controversial rollout, Google introduced Gemini, another chatbot, in December of the same year.
