Cardano has published a phased roadmap for its Dijkstra hard fork, targeting protocol version 12 code completion in Q4 2026 and Ouroboros Peras activation in Q2 2027 to accelerate transaction finality.
Cardano is preparing for its next major network upgrade, laying out a phased roadmap for the Dijkstra hard fork era that could bring changes to the protocol and significantly improve transaction finality.
The roadmap sets Q4 2026 as the target for completing the code required for the first phase of the upgrade. That stage would include a move to protocol version 12, alongside additional features intended to expand the network's capabilities.
The upgrade would then progress toward a second phase in Q2 2027, when Cardano plans to introduce Ouroboros Peras, a consensus enhancement designed to accelerate transaction finality.
The timeline remains subject to Cardano's on-chain governance process, meaning technical readiness alone will not determine when the changes reach the mainnet.
Named after computer scientist Edsger Dijkstra, the Dijkstra era follows Cardano's research-driven approach to protocol development.
The roadmap is divided into two primary stages. The first focuses on completing the underlying development work and preparing the network for a mainnet upgrade.
Cardano is targeting the end of 2026 for completion of the required code, after which the network would move through the necessary preparation and governance processes before deployment.
A key component of this stage is protocol version 12, which is expected to introduce changes designed to build the foundation for the subsequent phase of the upgrade.
However, the Q4 2026 target refers to development and readiness rather than a guaranteed mainnet activation date. Cardano's governance system will ultimately determine whether and when the upgrade proceeds.
The second stage is expected to arrive in Q2 2027, with the activation of Ouroboros Peras through an internal hard fork.
Peras is a proposed enhancement to Cardano's Ouroboros consensus system that is designed to reduce the time required for transactions to achieve stronger finality.
Faster finality could be particularly relevant for applications where confirmation speed matters, including decentralized finance, payments and other time-sensitive blockchain applications.
The upgrade would build on the technical changes introduced during the first phase rather than operating as an isolated network modification.

However, the roadmap itself does not guarantee a specific impact on ADA's price.
The market's response will likely depend on whether the technical milestones are achieved, how smoothly the upgrades are deployed and whether the resulting improvements translate into greater activity across the Cardano ecosystem.
The Dijkstra roadmap highlights Cardano's preference for a measured approach to major protocol changes.
With development targeted for completion in late 2026 and Peras planned for 2027, the network is taking a multi-stage route rather than rushing toward a single hard fork.
