Tokenization & RWA

BNY and Citadel Securities completed a transaction using tokenized US Treasuries on BNY's private digital ledger, settling within minutes and immediately deploying the asset as collateral in an overnight triparty repo — described as the first such use on a major triparty repo platform.
The transaction demonstrates how blockchain-based Treasury securities could move from settlement into short-term financing within minutes, helping institutions mobilize collateral more efficiently.
BNY and Citadel Securities have completed a transaction using tokenized US Treasuries to demonstrate how blockchain technology could accelerate collateral movement and improve access to short-term financing in institutional markets.
Announced on October 13, the transaction involved a two-year US Treasury note purchased by Citadel Securities through BNY on Tradeweb. BNY recorded a tokenized representation of the security on its private digital ledger, allowing it to settle within minutes rather than following the standard T+1 settlement cycle.
Following settlement, Citadel Securities used the tokenized Treasury as collateral in an overnight triparty repurchase agreement, or repo, with BNY providing cash in return. The firms described the transaction as the first use of tokenized assets on a major triparty repo platform.
The workflow demonstrates how a traditional government security can move from trade execution and settlement into short-term financing through a connected digital process.
US Treasuries are widely used as collateral in financial markets because of their credit quality and liquidity. Banks and trading firms pledge them to secure borrowing, finance positions and meet other financial obligations.
However, moving securities between accounts and settlement systems can create delays. Institutions may need to hold additional cash or position collateral in advance to ensure funding is available when required.
Tokenization represents a traditional asset digitally on a blockchain or distributed ledger. In this transaction, BNY used its private digital ledger to record a tokenized representation of the Treasury note.
The security settled within minutes and was then used in a repo transaction. By connecting settlement with financing, the process demonstrated how institutions could make collateral available for another financial purpose sooner.
The potential benefit is more efficient use of existing assets, rather than the creation of additional liquidity. Faster collateral movement could reduce operational friction and help financial institutions deploy capital more effectively.
However, the transaction does not establish that all Treasury settlements or repo transactions can now be completed at this speed. The demonstrated workflow involved a specific institutional transaction using BNY's infrastructure.
The transaction forms part of BNY's broader effort to connect traditional financial-market infrastructure with digital-asset capabilities.
The bank plans to introduce additional digital cash and tokenized deposit capabilities to support onchain settlement and financing for institutional clients.
BNY also expects to extend the operating hours of its traditional settlement platforms for Federal Reserve-eligible securities and US triparty transactions, with the aim of accommodating European and Asian trading hours in 2027.
These initiatives address a structural challenge in global financial markets: trading activity increasingly spans time zones, while important settlement and funding processes remain subject to operating-hour constraints.
Tokenization could help connect transactions across these processes, but extending market access will also require supporting cash infrastructure, operational controls and coordination between existing and digital systems.
Carolyn Weinberg, BNY's chief innovation and market transformation officer, said the transaction demonstrated what becomes possible when tokenized assets are used across institutional workflows, supporting a more connected financial system.
Citadel Securities also emphasized the importance of moving high-quality collateral efficiently, noting that reducing friction throughout the trade lifecycle could improve institutional market operations.
The BNY–Citadel Securities transaction adds a practical example to the growing institutional push to bring traditional financial assets onto digital infrastructure.
Financial institutions have increasingly explored tokenized securities and funds, with potential benefits including faster settlement, greater automation and more efficient transfers. Yet tokenization's significance depends on whether digital representations can be integrated into the financial activities that institutions already perform.
The latest transaction moves beyond simply representing a Treasury digitally. It demonstrates a workflow in which the tokenized security was used first in settlement and then as collateral for short-term financing.
That distinction matters because collateral mobility directly affects how financial institutions manage liquidity and deploy capital across trading activities.
The next challenge is to extend such workflows across a wider range of assets, counterparties and operating hours while preserving the legal certainty, controls and reliability expected of established financial-market infrastructure.
For BNY and Citadel Securities, the transaction provides a practical demonstration of that direction. Broader adoption will depend on how effectively tokenized assets, digital cash and traditional settlement systems can operate together at scale.
