PayPal Launches “PayPal World” to Unite Global Digital Wallets and Simplify Cross-Border Payments

PayPal has announced PayPal World, an ambitious new global payments ecosystem that connects leading digital wallets and payment systems onto a single interoperable platform. The goal: to eliminate the friction of cross-border transactions and unlock global commerce for nearly two billion users and millions of businesses.

The initial partners include Venmo, Mercado Pago, UPI (via NPCI), Tenpay Global, and PayPal itself. The platform will go live this fall, allowing users of these services to send money, shop internationally, and access new payment rails using their domestic wallets and currencies — both online and in-store.

What PayPal World Means for Consumers

For everyday users, PayPal World means simplified international payments:

  • Shop globally using your local wallet or currency.
  • Make instant money transfers across borders.
  • Pay in-store using QR codes, even in countries where your domestic wallet wasn’t accepted before.
  • Seamlessly send funds between PayPal and Venmo users, globally.

For instance, a PayPal user in the U.S. can now pay at a Weixin Pay–enabled café in China by scanning a QR code with their PayPal app. Or a UPI user in India can complete a purchase on a U.S. website by selecting UPI via PayPal at checkout.

What It Means for Businesses

Businesses benefit from broader customer reach and payment flexibility without needing new integrations. Once connected to PayPal World, businesses gain:

  • Access to nearly two billion global users,
  • More digital payment options with no added dev work,
  • Increased sales opportunities across new markets and commerce experiences, including AI shopping agents.

Strategic Partner Comments

“PayPal World is a first-of-its-kind payments ecosystem… a real game changer,” said Alex Chriss, President and CEO of PayPal. “We can’t wait to welcome many more global partners, wallets, and their users soon.”

Mercado Pago CEO Osvaldo Gimenez highlighted the collaboration’s power to “streamline cross-border commerce.”

NPCI CEO Ritesh Shukla added that integrating UPI aligns with India’s ambition to make global payments seamless and inclusive.

Tenpay Global CEO Wenhui Yang confirmed that PayPal and Venmo users will be able to scan Weixin Pay QR codes, opening up the Chinese mainland to foreign wallets.

Venmo and PayPal Interoperability

For the first time, PayPal and Venmo users will be able to send money to each other internationally, expanding Venmo’s utility to global peer-to-peer transactions.

Starting in 2026, Venmo users will also be able to shop online and in-store at millions of global merchants accepting PayPal — creating significant new reach for brands targeting digitally native, affluent, younger consumers.

Built for the Future of Commerce

PayPal World is technology-agnostic and cloud-native, designed to support:

  • AI agent-driven shopping,
  • Dynamic checkout buttons,
  • Future integrations with stablecoins and Web3 tools.

It marks a bold step toward democratizing global financial access through open APIs, local currency support, and seamless wallet-to-wallet connectivity.
