Tether Gold (XAU₮) has been recognized as an approved spot commodity within Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), enabling licensed firms to offer services involving the gold-backed token under ADGM's regulatory framework.
Tether has announced that its gold-backed digital asset, Tether Gold (XAU₮), has been recognized as an approved spot commodity within the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM), marking another step in the UAE's efforts to integrate tokenized real-world assets into its regulated financial ecosystem.
The recognition enables licensed firms operating within ADGM to offer services involving XAU₮, provided they obtain the necessary regulatory approvals and comply with the market's licensing framework.
The move follows ongoing collaboration between Tether and ADGM aimed at demonstrating the company's operational resilience, transparency, and adherence to regulatory standards. It also provides financial institutions with a clearer pathway to incorporate tokenized gold into their product offerings under a regulated environment.
The latest development further strengthens Tether's presence in the UAE as digital asset regulation increasingly shifts from pilot initiatives toward institutional adoption.
Tether Gold is a blockchain-based digital asset backed by physical gold.
Each XAU₮ token represents one troy ounce of physical gold stored in London Good Delivery-certified vaults, allowing investors and institutions to gain exposure to gold while benefiting from the speed, transparency, and transferability offered by blockchain technology.
By tokenizing physical bullion, XAU₮ enables users to hold, transfer, and manage ownership of gold digitally without compromising its underlying physical backing.
Commenting on the announcement, Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether, said the UAE continues to establish itself as a leading jurisdiction for digital asset regulation.
He noted that recognizing XAU₮ as an approved spot commodity within ADGM gives licensed businesses access to a blockchain-based asset backed by physical gold while supporting the growth of regulated digital finance and tokenized real-world assets across the Middle East.
Arvind Ramamurthy, Chief Market Development Officer at ADGM, said the financial center remains focused on building a regulatory environment that encourages responsible innovation in digital assets and tokenized real-world assets.
According to Ramamurthy, the inclusion of XAU₮ expands the range of regulated products available to firms operating within ADGM while supporting the continued development of Abu Dhabi's financial ecosystem.
The Tether Gold ADGM approval builds on an earlier decision by ADGM's Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) to recognize USD₮ as an accepted virtual asset reference for fiat-backed stablecoins.
With both USD₮ and XAU₮ now recognized within ADGM's regulatory framework, licensed firms have broader opportunities to integrate Tether's products into regulated financial services.
The development also highlights the growing collaboration between regulators and digital asset providers as governments seek to incorporate tokenized real-world assets into compliant financial markets.
Institutional interest in tokenized real-world assets (RWAs) has accelerated over the past year as financial institutions explore more efficient ways to issue, transfer, and manage traditional assets using blockchain technology.
The tokenized RWA market has grown to more than $31 billion, up from approximately $6.6 billion a year earlier, reflecting increasing demand for blockchain-based representations of traditional assets such as government bonds, real estate, commodities, and precious metals.
Gold-backed tokens such as XAU₮ illustrate how physical assets can be digitized while maintaining direct backing, combining the stability of traditional commodities with the efficiency and accessibility of blockchain infrastructure.
Tether said it will continue working with regulators, licensed institutions, and ecosystem partners across the UAE and the wider region to support the responsible adoption of digital assets and tokenized financial products.
