Ethereum developers are considering splitting the highly anticipated Pectra upgrade, which aims to improve the network's scalability and efficiency, into two separate phases.
The first phase of the upgrade could be implemented as early as the first quarter of 2025, according to discussions during the Ethereum execution layer meeting held on September 12.
“There is broad agreement that if we split the upgrade, the goal is to deliver Pectra as quickly as possible, with early next year being our target,” a developer stated during the meeting. The initial phase of the Pectra upgrade is expected to roll out in February 2025, if the decision to split is finalized.
“February feels realistic with a split Pectra,” another developer added, while Danno Ferrin, an Ethereum core developer, emphasized, “Splitting the upgrade only makes sense if we’re aiming for a Q1 delivery.”
The prospect of splitting the Pectra upgrade has sparked debate among developers. While some see it as a way to expedite the launch, others worry about potential delays. In fact, Ethereum Foundation researcher Ansgar Dietrichs expressed concerns that a delayed launch, even with a split, could be a setback. “A split that results in the first half being delivered as late as June would be a failure,” Dietrichs warned during the meeting.
However, dividing the upgrade may reduce risks. Smaller upgrades tend to carry fewer uncertainties, which is why some developers favor this approach.
It is worth noting that the Pectra upgrade is a combination of two major upgrades: the Prague upgrade, which focuses on the execution layer of the Ethereum network, and the Electra upgrade, which targets the consensus layer. Both components are critical for enhancing Ethereum's overall performance.
The final decision on whether to split the Pectra upgrade will be made during the Ethereum All Core Developers (ACD) call on September 19.
The broader Ethereum community is optimistic about the impact of the Pectra upgrade. Christine Kim previously stated that Pectra could be one of the largest upgrades in Ethereum’s history. Ethereum educator Sassal echoed this view, noting that Pectra could be a game-changer for the network.
In addition to the Pectra upgrade, Ethereum is set to incorporate other important improvements. In April 2024, Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 3074 was approved for inclusion in future updates. This proposal allows regular crypto wallets to function similarly to smart contracts, enabling features like transaction bundling and sponsored transactions, which enhance user convenience and network functionality.
