Tokenization & RWA

CME Group, a leading derivatives marketplace for institutional investors, is exploring tokenization as a means to enhance capital market efficiency through Google Cloud’s distributed ledger technology. According to a Tuesday press release, the two companies plan to begin direct testing with market participants later this year, with the goal of launching new services in 2026.
To facilitate these tests, CME will leverage Google Cloud’s Universal Ledger, a programmable private network, to examine how digital asset infrastructure can optimize settlement and clearing processes.
The collaboration highlights the growing momentum behind tokenization, which has attracted both crypto-native and traditional financial firms. Global asset managers and banks are increasingly looking to blockchain technology to facilitate the transfer of traditional financial instruments—such as funds, bonds, and securities—in pursuit of efficiency gains, faster settlements, and lower costs. Several industry reports from BCG, McKinsey, and Bernstein predict that tokenized assets could expand into a multitrillion-dollar market by the end of the decade.
CME Group Chairman and CEO Terry Duffy underscored the significance of this initiative:
"As the President and new Administration have encouraged Congress to create landmark legislation for common-sense market structure, we are pleased to partner with Google Cloud to enable innovative solutions for low-cost, digital transfer of value. Google Cloud Universal Ledger has the potential to deliver significant efficiencies for collateral, margin, settlement and fee payments as the world moves toward 24/7 trading."
"Our core mission is to provide our partners with the most advanced infrastructure, empowering them to accelerate innovation, drive efficiencies, and overcome the complexities inherent in today's financial systems," said Rohit Bhat, General Manager, Financial Services, Google Cloud. "Partnering with CME Group to innovate with GCUL exemplifies this commitment, demonstrating how Google Cloud helps partners transform their businesses through strategic collaborations and modern infrastructure, unlocking significant opportunities for the global financial market."
Later this year, CME Group and Google Cloud will initiate direct testing with market participants with the intent to launch new services in 2026.
