Amid Bullying and Controversy, Vitalik Buterin Reaffirms Authority Over Ethereum Foundation

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has reaffirmed his authority over the Ethereum Foundation, addressing recent community criticism and calls for leadership changes. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Jan. 21, Buterin dismissed suggestions to replace him and criticized some community members for fostering a toxic environment.

Buterin emphasized that decisions about the foundation’s leadership remain under his control until planned reforms establish a formal board structure. He also condemned harassment directed at current Ethereum Foundation Executive Director Aya Miyaguchi, labeling the abuse as “pure evil.”

The controversy stems from a growing campaign within the Ethereum community advocating for Danny Ryan, a prominent researcher and developer, to take on a leadership role. Ryan’s supporters cite his significant contributions to Ethereum’s development, including his work on the consensus layer upgrade that transitioned the network from proof-of-work (PoW) to proof-of-stake (PoS).

Despite the community pressure, Buterin made it clear that he alone holds the authority to decide on leadership changes within the foundation.

Harassment of Aya Miyaguchi

The debate over leadership has taken a darker turn, with Miyaguchi facing online harassment, including death threats. Miyaguchi, who has served as executive director since 2018, has been criticized by some community members for what they perceive as inefficiencies within the foundation.

Buterin strongly condemned the attacks on Miyaguchi, highlighting the harm such toxicity causes to the Ethereum ecosystem. “Some of Ethereum’s best developers have expressed their disgust with the social media environment being created,” he wrote, adding that this behavior undermines the community’s goals and discourages top talent from engaging.

Planned Reforms and Leadership Vision

Earlier, on Jan. 18, Buterin announced plans for leadership reforms aimed at improving communication between the foundation and the broader Ethereum ecosystem, according to Cointelegraph. He outlined goals such as supporting decentralized application (DApp) developers, enhancing privacy, promoting decentralization, and ensuring censorship resistance.

However, Buterin clarified that the foundation would not engage in political lobbying or ideological shifts, maintaining its focus on Ethereum’s technical and decentralized principles.
