Tokenization Infrastructure

Major U.S. banks are reportedly preparing a coordinated plan to launch a tokenized deposit network as early as the first half of 2027, marking one of the most ambitious steps yet in Wall Street’s gradual move toward blockchain-based financial infrastructure.
According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the initiative is expected to be operated by The Clearing House, a private-sector payments company owned by a consortium of major banks including JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo.
The proposed system — internally referred to by some participants as “the bridge” or “the chain” — is designed to enable tokenized bank deposits to move instantly across institutions while supporting continuous, 24/7 settlement.
Clearing House chief executive David Watson described the effort as a “big move for the banks,” adding that the industry is moving toward a “radically different” financial model increasingly shaped by onchain payments and programmable settlement infrastructure.
The planned network is expected to initially target large corporate clients and global institutions seeking more efficient payment and treasury management systems.
If implemented, the system would allow near-instant liquidity movement, improved cross-border payment efficiency, and continuous settlement capabilities outside traditional banking hours.
The project reflects a broader institutional push to modernize payment rails using blockchain-based infrastructure while maintaining regulated banking structures.
The initiative builds on a growing wave of experimentation by global financial institutions exploring tokenized deposits and blockchain-based settlement systems.
In November 2025, JPMorgan expanded its tokenization efforts with the launch of JPM Coin for institutional clients on Coinbase’s Base network, following earlier pilot phases.
More recently, Bank of New York Mellon introduced a tokenized deposit service for institutional clients, allowing blockchain-based representations of traditional bank balances.
Separately, JPMorgan’s Kinexys unit and Singapore’s DBS have been working on interoperability frameworks aimed at enabling cross-platform tokenized deposit transfers between institutional blockchain systems.
While the planned network has attracted attention across financial markets, the initiative remains in a design and coordination phase, with a potential rollout still several years away.
Rather than a standalone product launch, the project reflects a broader structural shift in how major banks are preparing for blockchain-based settlement systems within regulated financial frameworks.
Industry participants describe the effort as part of a long-term transition toward programmable money, where tokenized deposits could eventually operate alongside — or in competition with — stablecoins and central bank digital currencies.
If successfully implemented, the network could significantly reshape how institutional liquidity moves across banking systems, potentially reducing reliance on legacy settlement infrastructure.
However, the timeline — targeting 2027 — underscores that the shift remains gradual and highly dependent on regulatory alignment, technical standardization, and cross-bank coordination.
For now, the initiative signals that major U.S. financial institutions are no longer treating tokenization as an experiment, but as a long-term architecture strategy for the future of payments and settlement.
