On March 22, the United States think tank Future of Life Institute (FOLI) published an open letter signed by over 2,600 tech leaders and researchers, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, among others.

The letter urged AI companies to temporarily halt the development of more powerful AI systems than GPT-4 for at least six months, citing concerns that advanced AI could pose significant risks to humanity and society.
The FOLI expressed the need for careful planning and management of advanced AI, which it claimed was lacking in the current scenario.
According to Cointelegraph, OpenAI released GPT-4, its latest AI-powered chatbot, on March 14, which has shown exceptional performance in U.S. high school and law exams, exceeding the 90%.
FOLI has expressed concerns about the unchecked development of AI by firms, highlighting risks such as AI-powered machines flooding information channels with propaganda and untruths, and potentially automating all employment opportunities.

FOLI further warned that entrepreneurial efforts of AI companies may pose an existential threat, asking whether the development of non-human minds could lead to machines outnumbering, outsmarting, and ultimately replacing humans.
In response, FOLI has called for a temporary pause on developing AI systems that are more powerful than GPT-4, and for governments to consider a moratorium should companies fail to enact a pause.
