Over $160 million in crypto futures positions were liquidated in 24 hours, with short sellers on Bitcoin ($82.72M), Ethereum ($69.75M), and Solana ($8.67M) bearing the brunt as prices moved higher and triggered a broad short squeeze.
More than $160 million in cryptocurrency futures positions were liquidated over the past 24 hours, with bearish traders accounting for the majority of losses as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana posted gains that triggered widespread short liquidations.
The latest crypto futures liquidations highlight the continued volatility across digital asset markets, where leveraged positions remain highly sensitive to sudden price movements.
Bitcoin (BTC) recorded the largest liquidation volume, with approximately $82.72 million in futures positions wiped out during the period. Nearly 69.5% of those liquidations involved short positions, indicating that traders betting on lower prices were forced to close their positions as Bitcoin moved higher.
Ethereum (ETH) followed with roughly $69.75 million in liquidations, of which 60.3% were shorts.
Meanwhile, Solana (SOL) saw about $8.67 million in liquidated positions, with short traders accounting for almost 73% of the total, the highest proportion among the three major cryptocurrencies.
The concentration of short liquidations suggests the market experienced a classic short squeeze, where rising prices force bearish traders using leverage to buy back assets to cover their positions, adding further upward pressure to prices.
Although no single catalyst has been identified, liquidation events of this nature often follow periods of subdued trading or emerge in response to macroeconomic developments, regulatory news, or large institutional buying activity.
The latest figures indicate that many traders maintained bearish leveraged positions despite improving market conditions, leaving them vulnerable to rapid price reversals.
Liquidations remain a defining feature of cryptocurrency derivatives markets, where leveraged positions can magnify both profits and losses.
When positions are forcibly closed because traders no longer meet margin requirements, exchanges automatically liquidate those contracts to limit additional losses. In periods of heightened volatility, these forced liquidations can accelerate market moves as positions unwind in rapid succession.
The high percentage of liquidated short positions across Bitcoin, Ethereum, and particularly Solana suggests bearish sentiment had become crowded before prices reversed.
While short squeezes can create favorable conditions for bullish traders, they also tend to increase short-term volatility and may be followed by sharp corrections once liquidation-driven buying subsides.
The latest market activity serves as another reminder of the risks associated with leveraged trading, particularly during periods of elevated uncertainty. Traders using leverage generally seek to manage exposure through appropriate position sizing, sufficient margin, and predefined risk controls to reduce the likelihood of forced liquidations.
