Andreessen Horowitz has renamed its a16z Crypto fund to a16z Frontier, expanding its investment mandate beyond digital assets to include AI, autonomous machines, and new digital networks, while retaining crypto as a core focus. Managing partner Chris Dixon announced the change on October 22, framing blockchain increasingly as infrastructure underpinning broader technology and financial systems.
Andreessen Horowitz is expanding its crypto investment arm beyond digital assets, renaming a16z Crypto to a16z Frontier as the venture capital firm broadens its focus to emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, autonomous machines and new types of digital networks.
Announced on October 22 by managing partner Chris Dixon, the change expands the fund's investment mandate to include startups developing technologies and markets that could take years to mature. The firm said it would continue investing in crypto and related ventures and advocating for crypto regulation.
The rebrand reflects a shift in how the firm views blockchain technology: increasingly as infrastructure that can underpin products across financial services and other industries, rather than as a separate technology category.
Dixon said the distinction between crypto companies and other technology businesses has become less clear as banks, fintech companies and established financial institutions increasingly launch blockchain-based products.
Rather than defining potential investments by the technology they use, a16z Frontier will focus more broadly on what companies build and the markets they could create.
Blockchain and crypto remain central to that approach. Dixon highlighted stablecoins as an increasingly common tool for fintech companies and established institutions, while describing programmable blockchains as infrastructure for both centralized and decentralized financial services.
He also pointed to crypto's potential role in enabling transactions between AI agents and supporting new networks with built-in economic systems.
The firm has backed major crypto businesses and protocols, including Coinbase, Solana and Uniswap. The new name does not signal an end to that investment activity, although the firm has not disclosed how it intends to allocate capital across its expanded areas of interest.
The expanded strategy places AI alongside crypto as a major area of technological development. Dixon argued that AI is moving beyond making existing activities faster or cheaper toward enabling entirely new products, services and markets.
The firm is particularly interested in what Dixon described as new, technology-native applications: products and experiences that were not previously possible.
Other areas highlighted in the announcement include autonomous machines capable of perceiving and acting in the physical world, advances in biology and medicine, and startups combining software, hardware and services.
Dixon also pointed to networks connecting people and intelligent agents that can learn, coordinate, produce and transact. Such systems could create demand for new infrastructure and economic models, including blockchain-based payment and settlement mechanisms.
The investment thesis is that these technologies may converge. AI could generate new types of businesses and networks, while blockchain infrastructure could provide programmable payments and transaction capabilities for systems involving autonomous agents.
These are areas of interest rather than a fixed list of investment requirements, the firm said.
The announcement comes as established crypto investors expand their strategies into adjacent technology sectors.
In July, venture firm Paradigm announced a $1.2 billion fund with a broader mandate extending beyond crypto into areas including AI and robotics, according to Fortune. The trend reflects investors' interest in technologies that may overlap with blockchain infrastructure rather than fit neatly within a single sector.
For a16z, the change builds on a substantial crypto investment operation. The firm has raised nearly $10 billion across five crypto funds, according to The Information and Fortune. Its most recent fund, announced in May 2026, amounted to $2.2 billion, compared with the $4.5 billion fund it raised in 2022.
The firm has not announced a new fund size as part of the rebrand. The announcement instead describes an expansion of the investment scope.
Chris Dixon will lead a16z Frontier alongside firm founders Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz and general partners Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet. The firm said its operating teams would continue supporting portfolio companies with regulatory matters, market entry, talent, marketing and technical research and development.
The removal of “Crypto” from the fund's name is a notable change for one of the industry's most prominent venture investors. It reflects a view that blockchain technology is increasingly being incorporated into broader technology and financial systems, while the next generation of startups may combine crypto with AI, robotics and other fields.
However, the announcement does not establish that a16z is reducing its crypto investments. The firm explicitly said that crypto remains within its mandate, and it did not provide a breakdown of future allocations.
The more consequential test will be how the expanded strategy translates into investment decisions. Future funding announcements will show whether a16z Frontier continues to concentrate on blockchain businesses or directs a larger share of its capital toward companies operating across multiple technology sectors.
For now, the rebrand broadens the firm's investment scope while keeping blockchain technology within its long-term strategy.
