UAE First Country in the World to use blockchain for Organ Donation

During the Arab Health Forum that was held in Dubai UAE, the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) announced the Hayat mobile application. His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, launched the app during the event at Dubai World Trade Centre.  The announcement is in line with the Ministry of Health and Prevention organ donation program Initiative.

The Ministry of Health and Prevention partnered with Dhonor Health Tech, a leading national company focused on global healthcare blockchain solutions for the Hayat application.  UNLOCK spoke with Mr. Wassim Merheby, Chief Executive Officer of Dhonor Health about the partnership with the Ministry of Health and Prevention and their role in the Hayat app and organ donation program. He stated, “We worked with the Ministry of health on the first phase of the project which entails patient registration. We are now working with them on the second and most important phase which is building the standards that will improve the matching of organs with patients, organ verification and transplant optimization using AI and Blockchain. Phase two will also entail connecting to the seven hospitals across the UAE that provide donor transplant operations one of them being Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi.”

Using Blockchain and AI the Ministry of Health and Prevention will be able to provide safer and optimized organ donation procedure.  As Merheby explained, “Using AI and Blockchain, we will ensure that organs being donated are verified using DNA swabs that have already been uploaded onto the blockchain. Hospitals can verify that the DNA of the organ they have matches the DNA information of an organ donor on the blockchain. Using AI we can also optimize matching organs from donor to patients. This will make the UAE number one country when it comes to eradication of organ trafficking and also in terms of success rate when it comes to organ implantation procedures.”

One of the main sponsors of the Ministry of Health and Prevention Hayat application has been Pfizer, one of the leading biopharmaceutical companies in the world.
